We took a chance that we might still have eyes on us and drove down to the beach to make a portal, because only the naiads could get us all the way to the other side and my pregnant nose wasn’t up to us coming out stinking of chlorine from the pool.
The night was cool, the first stars faintly visible in that low light before the city lit up for nighttime to drown them out. No police within sight, (or smell) no guns, no sign that there was an attack on our home other than some rubber on the driveway and a few broken shrubs.
I flexed my Fae magic just enough to heal the sad, twisted plants before getting into the SUV. On the way to the park, I gave my ‘doorways 101 lecture’ of how to travel the ‘tween spaces safely.
“Now remember, you might step out onto dry land, you might get a dunking. It depends on the wild magic, and the whim of the naiads themselves,” I reminded them one last time as we walked down to the water. “Hold hands, and think of me, only me. I’ll be focusing the garden and I don’t want any of you misdirecting us accidentally.”
Grayson could use the portal alone, due to the practice he’d already had, and I trusted Niall to stay focused. But the others hadn’t traveled by portal before, and I wasn’t about to lose anyone on the easiest part of the trip.
I took Gray’s hand, and Niall’s, and he held Geallta around the waist. Behind us, the others did the same and held onto our shoulders. The portal glowed gently, beckoning us in, and I walked into the frigid California water and through the gate.
On the other side, Nineve and her sisters waited for us, watching us walk out of the garden fountain, dry as bone.
“Princess, you honor us with your presence,” she trilled at us sweetly.
“Nineve, the honor, as always, is mine. You are gracious to allow us passage through your home.”
Two of the naiads giggled behind their hair of green twisted kelp. “It will entertain us to watch you make the journey, and if you don’t make it, we will happily keep you below with us.”
“These are shifters, not High Fae, Nineve. They need air to breathe or they experience true death, not just the torture your jailed courtiers receive.”
She sniffed but nodded. “Of course. We will not keep your people, Morgan, I am simply offering you all the aid at our disposal.”
I nodded and shot Gray a look when he chuckled. The naiads are beautiful, and deadly. Lovely psychotics who will drown a man for fun and never understand why it was wrong.
“Of course Nineve, and you know how much I respect your crown. Just don’t let my folk drown tonight.”
She gave me a razor sharp, toothy grin. “Of course, Princess. It is much more entertaining when they do not die…too quickly.”
I sighed and suppressed a smile of my own. Nineve and Myst were the two queens who refused to give allegiance to my father as the High King.
